Today, the solution to the biggest problem of hair salons requires a different outlook. Creating great hair styles, client satisfaction, using high quality products are must-have features now. Discounts, offering more and being a big salon doesn't work any more. So, what should be done?

Today, the biggest problem of hair salons is not finding new clients nor the bad economy. The problem is to keep the clients coming back again and again with frequency. And the solution to the problem requires a different outlook that consists of two main principals. First, hair dressers must see themselves as an artist who makes changes in people’s lives using their talent and sees their business as a journey between them and their clients as we mentioned in “Being the Picasso of Hair Designing”. Second, they must see themselves as a businessman or a businesswoman who is aware of the challenges of doing business in today’s world, because yesterday’s business rules don’t work anymore.

Now, there are many hair salons and this situation lowers the service prices and this causes the business to be underestimated. Therefore, hairdressers who want the big profits that their art deserves like in the past times must differentiate their business, stand out of the crowd and provide services in a professional way. So, the stylist who wants to build a terrible hair salon business must do business the old way with the old rules. And here’s the old rules that we called the 7 keys to building a terrible hair salon business:

1) Do not Evaluate Your Clients’ Visiting History

Have no idea about your clients’ visiting information such as which clients of yours haven’t been coming, which ones are loyal and more profitable, and which ones are beginning to visit less frequently. Neglecting these things cause you to be unaware of your client profile and to lose your business perspective. So, you won’t realize when your clients left you or you will wonder where the big profits of past times are.

2) Do not Do Something Special For Them

Do not remember your clients on their special days or do not offer special deals that they can take advantage of on certain days. And, miss the chance of establishing a relationship or strengthening the relationship that already exists. So, don’t make your clients feel unique or important to you and take one more step to build a terrible hair salon.

3) Do not Keep in Touch With Your Clients

Just forget them until they visit you again, if they visit you again because when the customers don’t hear from you, they begin to think that you don’t care about them and after a while they don’t care about you. So, do not communicate or be visible to them and you will make it easy for them to choose another stylist.

4) Focus on the Short Term

“The biggest impediment to high performance is short term focus” says Marty Neumeier in his book ZAG. That is right, because quick money making efforts and reducing the marketing budget in tough economic times focuses on short term and always damages the future of businesses. Conversely, investing to create a great value for your clients creates differentiation, purchase and familiarity. So, focus on short term profit, don’t invest the future of your business and guarantee your failure.

5) Do Not Innovate and Do Not Differentiate Your Business

Today any kind of business is required to be able to innovate at the speed of the market to stay alive. 10 years ago your business was different than today and is going to be different in a few years. As Charles Darwin said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” So, keep doing what you have been doing and never innovate and differentiate your business, and let the others push you out of the game.

6) Be Content With Making Your Clients Just Satisfied

“A full 80% of customers are vulnerable to competitive offers, and fewer than 20% are willing to recommend your brand to others,” says Marty Neumeier. You might think that your customers are fully satisfied with your services and just because of this they are not vulnerable to competitive offers. But your satisfied clients may only keep coming back to you till their attentions are pulled by a competitive offer because client satisfaction is a must now and is not enough anymore. You can think that 80% of your clients are satisfied and could leave you at any time. So, be happy with your satisfied clients and never ever think to exceed your clients’ expectations to make them more than satisfied. Let your competitors do it and so let your clients go to your competitors.

7) Be Unaware of Your Place in Your Market

Do you know the growth of hair salon business last year? Let me answer, it was -3.7%. Do you know the anticipated number of hair salons that will go out of business in the next 18 months in the U.S.? It is 40,000. Probably the downsizing will continue this year. So, what do you plan to do? Did you measure your growth last year? Was it higher or lower than the market average? This information is important because if you don’t know your statistics and your place in your market you can’t know what caused your revenue growth or profit loss. So, be unaware of this information and do not have chance to plan for the future of your business in the right way.

We will discuss these 7 crucial basics in detail in future articles and explain what should be done.

There are many ways to run a successful salon, and many different types of salons to run, but the key to making any salon business work is a detailed and complete salon business plan.

==Detail Exactly What Type Of Salon You Propose To Run==

It goes without saying that the salon business plan should lay out in detail exactly what type of salon you propose to run. There are many types of salons, from hair salons to nail salons to day spas and beauty retreats.

Some salon owners focus on just one type of salon, while others offer a variety of related services to their clientele.

==Detail Your Financial Information==

A good salon business plan will contain detailed financial information on the proposed business to be opened, if it is a new business.

In the case of an existing business, it is important that the salon business plan contain information on the current financial health of the business.

==Attracting Financing And Potential Investors==

A business plan has many uses to the entrepreneur, but one of the most important of all is in attracting financing and potential investors in the fledgling business.

After all, no responsible investor will want to part with his or her hard earned money unless he or she is certain the business has a shot at succeeding.

==The Business Plan Is The First Thing Investors Will Want To Look At==

It is important that your salon business plan be professionally prepared, and that it be a good reflection on you and your business.

After all, the business plan will be the first thing any potential lender will look at. It is important that it put your business in the best possible light.

==Legal And Tax Planning Considerations==

A good business plan, whether for a salon business or any other type of business, will also be quite useful in planning your taxes properly, and in planning the legal strategy for your new business.

There are a great many legal and tax planning considerations when starting a new business, so it may be a good idea to consult with a good lawyer or tax attorney when creating your salon business plan.

<img src="http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m70/chonquesha/fashion%20beauty/marykateandashleyolsen.jpg" border="0" alt="models portrait"align="right">Should you invest in a tanning salon that didn’t do well? That can be a very tough question to answer. This type of business has the potential to do very well, so you should dig around to discover why it had to close down. Was the owner ill? Did they retire? Was the business making a profit? What type of customer base did they have? All of these questions can help you get to the core of the issue.

A tanning salon has to be easily accessible in order to do well. Customers want to be able to go tan before work, at lunch, and after work. They don’t want to spend a great deal of time traveling to the location. If the building is being leased it is possible for you to move the equipment to a new location though.

They may be going somewhere else already though. You need to find out what your competition is. Are there three other tanning salons in town or ten? These numbers are going to be a big issue to consider. How are you going to offer something more than what the others have? How are you going to get their customers to step into your business and try it out?

The equipment in the establishment may be old and outdated. As a result you may need to invest in new tanning equipment. This can be a very expensive prospect, but one that is necessary to get the customers walking into the business. Many consumers want to take advantage of the sunless tanning booths as well as those that offer UV rays.

It is important to take your own finances into consideration as well. Any type of business venture has some risk associated with it. If you are up to the challenge though it could end up being a very good experience for you. Understanding what you need to complete to transform the business is important. Having a realistic idea of the cost is also something you need to be looking at.

Money also needs to be allocated for the purpose of advertising your ownership of the business. Make sure you include information about the various changes you have made. You want people to be willing to give it a chance. If you offer great promotions it will get them in to check it out in larger numbers.

These are just a few of the major issues you will need to address when you consider buying a tanning salon that didn’t work out for someone else. It is possible you can turn it into a very profitable business for you. It is vital though that you learn from the various mistakes those before you made.

The good news though is that tanning salons are very popular business locations. People love to look great without having to spend a great deal of time in the sun. If you weigh the pros and cons of this type of business opportunity you just may discover it holds the key to your personal and financial freedom.

<img src="http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii150/healmassageandbodywork/officemassage.jpg" border="0" alt="Corporate Massage"Align="right">Many times a Massage Therapist will feel as if, in order to get clients, they need to do expensive advertising in the newspaper. When I first stated, I had no money to do advertising with, so I had to find another way to market myself. It took longer, but the clients I got as a result stayed with me for years, and they in turn referred me their friends.

You see marketing yourself to other sources, that’s not newspaper advertising, does take a little longer, and you will need a bit more patience, but if you market yourself to the right areas you’ll get more solid and lasting results. Its not how ‘big’ you advertise, in fact it’s the opposite.

Not having any money to do expensive advertising when I first started was good in this way. It taught me to be creative and as a result I learnt something no college or massage school could ever teach me. I learnt that it was not about exposure to ‘everyone’ it was about exposure to certain groups of people who were looking for massage specifically. And after time, I found out how to find exactly how was looking for massage and how I could market myself to those people. As a result I was busier than I had ever been, had more clients than I imagined I would in one go, and worked more than I had in months, in just one month….that is, after I knew what to do.

You see marketing your practice is not just about ‘getting your message out there’. It’s about getting your message out there to people who want massage. And you can even take it one step further; getting your message out there to people who want your particular type of massage. And the secret of finding this is in your own practise. How fantastic is that!

So the best thing to remember is that it’s not about general advertising, it’s about specific advertising to people who want massage therapy as a treatment/maintenance/prevention/solution. The key is to get into this mindset and work it from there. On part two, I’ll explain more!

Good luck!

<img src="http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j124/Black_heart1/Hair/hair.jpg" border="0" alt="Hair style Pictures, Images and Photos"align="right">Choosing the right salon for you is important. If you select a salon that you don’t like then you will dread going to the beauty treatments that are intended to make you feel good about yourself. To start your search you should create a list of characteristics that you want from your salon. This list should include price, location, personality of the stylist, services offered, and experience and skill level of your hair stylist.

One of the salon characteristics that usually impacts a person’s salon choice is the salon’s location. People want to find a salon that is close to their home. However, if they find a superior salon or stylist then they may be willing to travel.

The second salon characteristic that impacts a person’s salon choice is the selection of services that are offered. For people who usually only go to the salon for a cut, color and style a limit list of services is fine. However, there are people who want a salon that offers all the bells and whistles including spa treatments.

Price is another consideration that impacts people’s salon choices. People want to go to a salon that offers reasonable prices for the services that are offered. People on tight budgets may want to consider going to a teaching salon, as these salons offer beauty treatments for a lot less money than a regular salon.

The most important factor that determines what salon a person goes to is the personality and talent of the hair stylist. When you are searching for a hair stylist you want to make sure that you like their personality. You also want to make sure that they know how to handle your hair type.

And that is not doing general advertising to ‘everyone’, I was talking about getting specific to marketing to people who want massage, and that the secret lies in your own practice.

It’s easy to see what groups of people want massage therapy by looking at your own business, and by looking at complimentary practices in the community apart from yours.

To get more clients without spending hundreds of dollars have a look at who else in your community might treat people a similar way to you. This means people who are serving others to help with muscle soreness, fatigue and other reasons.

You see it’s not about who you think needs massage, its more about looking at who is looking for massage. So if you make a list of all the practitioners in your local area who treat people to alleviate their muscle problems, then you are onto a good start.

Or, perhaps you do massage that focuses more on stress reduction. So ask yourself who else in my community helps people relax? There might be people such as Yoga Teachers, Hypnotherapists, health products, Naturopaths etc. You must ask yourself if these people have the people who will seek massage therapy. If the answer is yes, then you are more likely to have successful results than if you stuck an ad in the paper and hoped for the best.

Success never, ever comes from hoping. It comes through specific action with good solid planning.

Start today to write down a list of all the people that have the people who also seek massage to help them and their health issues, whether mental or physical. You are seeking the same group of people, and yes, it must be specific.

Good luck to you.

Not all tanning salons are the same, and consumers are being more conscious about this. They want to get a deep golden color from their tanning efforts, but they also want to know they are safe, get the information they need, be treated well when they enter the facility, and have their appointment time honored. If a salon can’t offer all of this then they won’t remain in business very long.

One of the biggest issues to be concerned with is safety. Tanning is an option rather than necessity. You don’t want the experience to turn bad due to cords being out where you can trip or the sunning areas not being kept clean. The equipment also need to be well maintained with emergency shut off switches clearly marked.

Information is a key element of the salon services. There are many questions people will have when they come in. All of the staff members need to be well trained on these issues. Otherwise it negatively reflects on the standards of the business. People will want to know about the various types of equipment, how UV rays can affect them, and what products they should use to accelerate their tan.

People often go to a tanning salon rather than laying outdoors due to time restraints. Therefore a good salon needs to be firm about appointment times. If people are late they will have to reschedule. This way those people showing up on time for their appointments don’t get penalized for it. You need to ask the salon how they handle such issues so you can be prepared for them.

Make sure you check out the various types of tanning equipment in it. This way you can have what you want access to available. Most tanning salons offer both beds and booths. Not all of them do though so make sure you ask what they feature. Many have also added sunless tanning equipment for those that are concerned about UV rays but still want a great look.

Every single customer should feel welcome at your salon. Even when they call they should feel like they are appreciated. Some customers really feel better about signing up for tanning services if they can look around the facility first. If the salon won’t authorize the tour then it should serve as a red flag that they aren’t the place for you to enjoy tanning at.

For many people, tanning is something of a luxury. They want to do it but at a good price. They don’t want to spend too much money in order to look good. Compare the price but also the features, the service, and how far it is to the tanning facility. Based on all of these factors you can make a good decision. Some tanning salons offer a free session so this could be a chance for you to really check it out without spending a cent.

You will discover there are many differences between tanning salons. Find out what you have to choose from in your area. This will allow you to have the very best tanning experience possible for the best price. Don’t hesitate to tell the owner if you find something is lacking from the experience. Chances are they will work hard to implement necessary changes.

More and more business people are deciding to open salons these days, due to the popularity of the services offered by salons, and the chances that that offers to potential business owners for excellent profits. There are many types of salons, offering many choices to the prospective owner, and many ways to be successful. The trick is to choose what services you are going to offer, and outline a plan to capitalize on current business trends so that you will be as profitable or more so than others in the business.

One key and important thing to do to succeed is to create a complete and successful business plan to outline that strategy, both for your own benefit and to communicate it to potential employees, marketing partners and investors.

A good business plan….

1. Will delineate what kind of business you want to run, particularly what services your salon will offer. There are so many types of salons from hair to nails to day spas that it will be important to state your goals.

2. Treat much of the important and detailed financial information that needs to be dealt with when a new business is being opened. Or if you are an existing business, it is important that your salon business plan contains information on the current financial health of the business. There are many potential people that would want to know this, and one of the more important is potential investors. Your business plan will let them know if they want to invest in your business, so it needs to be convincing that your business will be healthy, profitable and growth-oriented.

3. for any business including salons will be useful for dealing with issues at tax time, and in educating you about some of the legal requirements of your finances. Beyond that, you might want a legal strategy for your salon, and this plan will be useful if you ever need to show something about your business to an attorney.

4. There are so many legal, financial and tax considerations to plan on when creating your business plan that you may not want to do it alone. So it’s a good idea to look for a professional such as a lawyer or an accountant to help you in various aspects of creating your business plan. This plan will make it easier for you to communicate to the financial professionals efficiently so that you spend less money on their services.

5. You know your business best, but it is important that your business plan be professionally prepared, or prepared by someone that knows your business well that also knows the basics of a good business plan. They will best know how to present your business in a good light to meet all of the above considerations.

& beauty salons are businesses that are in a very high demand market. However there is a lot of competition in this industry.

If you learn how to set your business up right then competition will not be a problem for you.

Here are a few things to consider before starting your search:

1. Start Date

2. Income Goal

3. Start Up Capital

4. Franchise or Existing:

5. Location

6. Time Commitment

Start Date:

When do you plan to actually start your business? Many people think that they first have to find out all of the details first so that they can plan the start date around everything else. Well that may take a little longer by doing it that way. Do it like the pros do. Establish a date that is realistic in your mind, for example: I will start in 3 months on August 1st, 2008. Now that you have established a date then everything else will revolve around that date. Know your start date & write it down.

Income Goal:

How much do you want to make monthly or annually? This is a very important question to ask yourself because it will help match you up with the right business opportunity. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how much you can make with a hair salon, beauty shop or any other type of business. Know how much you want to make & write it down.

Start Up Capital:

How much money do you have to start your business venture? It’s okay if you don’t have any idea of how much it may cost to start a business as long as you are able to find money when you need it. Most successful businessmen rarely ever start a business with their own money even if they have it sitting in their bank accounts. They use other people’s money like banks & credit unions.

Franchise or Existing:

Franchises are the best way to go because they have a good system in place that has been proven for years. Systems don’t fail, people do. The franchise will train you on everything that you will need to know about this business to become very successful. They cover every area that will need to be covered. However the start up costs is very high. Most franchises start from $250,000 & they may require you to have $100,000 liquid cash on hand before even looking at you. The $100,000 is for you to survive on during the first 6 months (the hardest time). That’s the main reason that the franchise model works so well.

If you are looking at an existing business then find out exactly why they are selling, for example: If they are selling due to illness or retirement then that’s okay but if they are selling due to lack of success then be very careful. Most businesses fail due to poor management skills.

Location:

This is very important because if you don’t have a good location then you may not get enough business. The thing about high traffic locations is that they generally cost more to get. You may make more money in a high traffic area but you will end up having a higher overhead than a low traffic area.

It is not impossible to still make a lot of money in a low traffic area as long as you advertise to let people know that you are there. Since you can save by being in a low traffic area you can spend a little more on perks for your customer like free coffee or newspapers or just better service. If you treat people well they will always come back to you for business. It’s all about customer service.

Time Commitment:

You will definitely have to put in the hours if you own your own business. Most business owners generally work 60 + hours per week. If you are passionate about owning your own business then the time factor will not be an issue for you. However if you are hesitant of working more than 40 hours per week then you may need to think about this a little more before going any further.
